Welcome to the Southern Cancer Network’s website.
The Southern Cancer Network is one of four Regional Cancer Networks in New Zealand established to support the implementation of cancer control strategies and action plans in New Zealand.
The purpose of the Southern Cancer Network is to take a leadership, facilitation and coordination approach to support providers of cancer care in the South Island work collaboratively to:
- support the implementation of the New Zealand Cancer Control Strategy and associated National Programme of Cancer whose dual key aims are:
1. to reduce the incidence and impact of cancer
2. to reduce the inequalities with respect to cancer - improve the journey of cancer patients and their family / whānau through the complex pathway of care, aiming for high quality, equitable, patient centred, multidisciplinary and evidence based care.
The regional network’s three strategic directions for 2009-2014 are to:
- share knowledge and information to enable informed decision making
- facilitate regional service quality improvement leading to better, sooner, more convenient services and
- support innovation and infrastructure development to reduce inequalities and build capacity and capability.
The Southern Cancer Network stakeholders represent and work across different components of the cancer continuum: South Island DHBs, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), GPs and Primary Health Organisations (PHOs), cancer service providers, cancer consumers and their family / whānau, hospices, and research organisations.
The work of the network could not occur without the expertise, goodwill and collaborative spirit of the SCN stakeholders - we thank you for your ongoing support.
