South Island Blood and Cancer Co-ordination Group

Background

In 2005 the South Island District Health Board Chief Executives requested a review of non-surgical cancer treatment services in the South Island, with the aim of improving regional collaboration in the delivery of services across the region. In November of that year the report “Non-surgical Cancer Treatment Service Plan for the South Island” by the South Island Regional Collaboration Project (South Island District Health Boards and South Island Shared Service Agency Limited) was released. The key recommendations for action included the strategic goal 2A1, which was to establish a South Island Oncology Co-ordination Group and task specific work groups to implement the service plan

The generic work of the SCN and local cancer networks is focused across the cancer continuum; however over the last three years an increasing number of SCN work pieces have focused specifically on supporting clinically-based South Island Blood and Cancer Services, including Modelling of the Linear Accelerator Requirements for the South Island 2012-2026; the establishment and support of the South Island PET Scan Variance Committee and a South Island PET scan funding model; the South Island Lung Cancer Working Group, Upper South Island and Lower South Island Lung reports and 2010 stocktake report; the South Island Bowel Cancer Working Group, South Island Bowel Patient Mapping report and development of the South Island Colorectal Cancer Fast Track Pathway; implementation of the South Island Clinical Cancer Information System; the Medical Oncology Wait Time Project; the South Island Cancer Nurse Network; the establishment of the South Island Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Multidisciplinary Team and a South Island AYA Advisory Group; and the South Island Oncology Research Group and work plan.

Purpose
  • To provide clinical oversight and governance for the Southern Cancer Network (SCN) South Island (SI) working groups and initiatives that have a clinical focus
  • To develop a South Island Blood and Cancer Service Co-ordination Plan (SIBCSCP)
Role

The South Island Blood and Cancer Service Co-ordination Group will provide clinical governance and leadership to oversee the SCN South Island clinically focused work pieces and faster progress regional co-ordination and collaboration through the development of a South Island Blood and Cancer Service Co-ordination Plan.
